Certified translation differs from other kinds of translation in that it is performed by an expert translator (commonly referred to as a “sworn translator”), authorised by a Court of Appeal, who attaches their official stamp to each page of your document. A sworn translator certifies that the translation is authentic, correct and matches the source document, in order to give it legal value and thus allow you to use it in all cases where the official document is required. Our teams have all the skills required to handle certified translation projects.

To prepare a document for official use in a foreign country, a certified translation may be all you need. However, in some cases, other steps must be taken to strengthen the legal value of your document, namely:

Legalisation,

first of all, this means the authentication of signatures that appear on the original document. This step can be carried out at a local council, notary’s office or chamber of commerce (CCI), either by you or by the translation agency. Next comes the certification stage, after which the chamber of commerce checks the identity of the expert translator and authenticates their signature. You may then submit the certified translation to the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs for authentication and legalisation (in most cases it is not necessary to supply the original document). Only documents issued in France may be legalised in France. Otherwise, you must contact the authorities of the country that issued the document (consulate, embassy, etc.).

the Apostille,

which confers an additional level of security as, in this case, the State guarantees the certified translation. In France, after the translation has been legalised by a local council officer or notary, the sworn translator sends the translation to the Court of Appeal, which then certifies that the signature of the local council officer or notary is authentic and that all statutory procedures have been followed. The process can therefore be lengthy. PDF:

We increasingly receive documents in PDF format, which can be difficult to convert into a format that can be exploited by our translators. However, this poses no problem to our teams, even if you cannot provide us with an equivalent Word file. Thanks to our long-standing partnership with an external DTP service provider, we can offer you professional PDF-to-Word conversions for the most complex documents. By opting for this fast and inexpensive solution, you’ll receive your source documents and translation in an identical format which can be edited by your teams. What’s more, having a workable source file means we can harness all of our CAT technology in order to optimise cost and timing.

InDesign:

In order to cut out several steps of the process, including the costly reintegration of Word files by your desktop publishing teams, you can send us your project directly in InDesign file format (IDML or INDD file). Our DTP partner will take care of the rest at minimal cost. We will then deliver our translation of your annual report as an InDesign file identical to your source file in all other respects.
